Sunken Eyes Charcoal Drawing

This is another drawing from a mugshot. I used charcoal, pastel and pencil to get this done. I started out with a light gray pastel stick, which was fun because I could be very loose with the initial drawing. it was so light that any mistakes were barely visible. I then stepped up the drawing with the pencil, which gave me the medium tones, finishing up with charcoal for the really bold blacks.

Mugshot Portrait

Here is the next installment in my Mugshot series. I have been wanting to paint people more, but the trouble is finding a model! I thought, why not a captive audience? This unhappy fellow is acrylic on canvas board. I hope he had a nice stay.

Holm House

Growing up in Stayton, I saw the Holm House often as a child. It strikes me as an impressive and elegant building that would look lovely as a charcoal drawing.

Zena Road pt 2

This is the same subject matter as Zena Road, I liked it so much I thought I would give it another go for the fun of it. This is oil on panel, with a plaster ground. 9 3/4" X 19".

Woman at Table

I have been experimenting with watercolors for the past couple of weeks, with little success. This watercolor came close to behaving like I wanted it to, probably because I did not use it in the traditional way. This is done on a panel prepared with plaster of paris instead of paper.

Hill Road

I did this plein air oil painting today just outside of town. It was a lovely day so I walked with my painting gear in a backpack.

Charcoal

This is a charcoal drawing of a mugshot. What I liked about the original was the miserable yet cherubic look on this guy's face. I would like to try painting some portraits, so some practice with charcoal is in order.

Zena Road

I was struck by the contrast of oak trees against the late summer glow of the grass on this pasture on Zena Road between Salem and Amity, Oregon. This oil painting on canvas captures that for me.

This is the view across the Willamette river from the riverfront park in downtown Salem, Oregon. It was done plein air in oil on panel.
